A new version of Java (Java 8 update 51) was released on 6/15/15. You may see a notification asking if you want to install Java. It is fine to proceed with that update.

As part of the update, you may see a prompt indicating you have older versions of Java on your system and asking if you want to remove them. If you are not aware of having applications that require a prior version of Java, it is fine to say yes and remove those. Banner does NOT require an older version of Java.

Update: The scheduled network maintenance is complete. If you experience any network connectivity issues after this time, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 740-587-6395 or helpdesk@denison.edu.

Over the last few months, faculty and those staff who use the M:\ (Media) drive were contacted about upcoming changes to the backup mechanisms Denison uses for this drive. This is a reminder and notification that those changes will be going into effect as of 7/10/15. ITS has worked with faculty and staff that have crucial college operational data on this drive, moving it to the S:\ (Shared) drive.

What does this mean for the M:\ (Media) Drive?

The M:\ (Media) drive will continue to exist on our fault-tolerant storage hardware and you will continue to be able to request new course folders for sharing large files. Our file system allows us to restore deleted files for a short period of time and the volume will continue to be mirrored to our disaster recovery hardware at Wright State University, so there will be some degree of redundancy to prevent loss in the event of a disaster to the Fellows data center.

We will not be creating point-in-time copies of files to be able to restore from backup disk, so in the event of an errant file modification or if a virus corrupts your files, data on this drive will not be recoverable. If you would like to backup the contents of your M:\ (Media) drive, our Google Drive environment affords unlimited space.

Facebook just announced a new feature that allows you to send money to a friend using your own debit card and your friend’s debit card, which of course are linked to both of your bank accounts. You need to attach your debit card to your Facebook messenger to send and receive money. Facebook claims this is all technically secure.

Apple thought their Apple Pay was secure too, but fraudsters started making cash right away gaming the system. This new Facebook payment option could allow several kinds of scams. Be alert when you get emails that claim a Facebook friend has sent you money.  Also, when a friend messages you and their account has been hacked, there could be a criminal trying to scam you by impersonating your friend.

So, anything to do with Facebook Payments: Think Before You Click!
