ITS will be performing network maintenance on Tuesday 2/9/16 from 5:00-7:00am which may result in the loss of the wired or wireless network in the Library.

Please do not edit files over the network or submit information online during this time period as your work may be lost when the network outages occur.

This post will be updated when the work is complete. If you experience any network connectivity issues after this time, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 740-587-6395 or helpdesk@denison.edu.

5:30 a.m.: VPN upgrade is complete.

An upgrade to the Remote Access/VPN environment is planned for tomorrow morning (Thursday 2/4/16) from 5:00-6:00AM. You will not be able to connect to remote.denison.edu via the web page or Network Connect/Junos Pulse/Pulse Secure during this time. An update will be posted to netnotes.denison.edu as soon as the upgrade is complete.

If you use the Network Connect, Junos Pulse, or Pulse Secure VPN cilent, the next time you connect after the upgrade you will be prompted to update your VPN client. If you are not prompted and the connection is not successful, please remove the current version of the VPN client and then reinstall it.

On 2/3/16 ITS will release an upgrade to the McAfee Agent on Denison-owned Windows computers. This upgrade is “silent” and will not impact your ability to use your computer while it is happening. At some point during the upgrade process, you might notice a Windows notification regarding your antivirus protection being off. It should resolve itself after a short period of time once the new software version is installed and running. If the Windows notification stays there permanently, please contact the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@denison.edu or 740-587-6395.

Updated – 1/27 – 2:30 PM

Work completed

Two minor upgrades will take place during our morning maintenance on both Tuesday and Wednesday, 1/26-1/27 – 6:00 AM – 7:30 AM.  There may be brief moments when these Banner modules may be unavailable. (Payroll -Tuesday — Financial Aid – Wednesday)

If you experience difficulty after the upgrade, please contact the Helpdesk at x6395 or email: helpdesk@denison.edu.

ITS has prepared a brief presentation and quiz to help you detect fake emails attempting to lure you into divulging your login information to hackers. Take the quiz by 1/27/16 and earn a score of 80% or higher and you’ll be entered to win one of five $15 Denison Dollar gift certificates!

Get Started Now! Go to MyDenison and click the Blackboard (Bb) icon in the top right corner. Under “My Courses” in Blackboard, click the “IT Security Training” link and then click the “/ Training Modules/Cyber Security – Phishing 101” link and follow the on-screen instructions.

Get Smart! Hackers constantly try new ways to get you to share your login information and other personal details that, if shared, could cause you a lot of grief and even potential harm.Unfortunately, hackers continue to repeatedly send “phishing” emails to university email addresses all over the world, including Denison – attempting to trick folks into divulging their login information. When successful, these hackers step up their invasive activities – using the information to not only send spam emails but also to automatically delete messages from inboxes, change “display names” on accounts, and other highly disruptive activities. Help protect yourself and Denison by improving your ability to spot fake emails!

Updated Post: The Xtender upgrade has been completed.  Please report any Xtender issues to the ITS Help Desk at 740-587-6395 or helpdesk@denison.edu. The Help Desk will reply as soon as possible during regular business hours (see www.denison.edu/its/helpdesk for hours).

The Xtender system (Banner Document Management) will be upgraded this Saturday, (1/16/16) from 6 AM – 4 PM.

This upgrade is predominately comprised of new compatibility services associated with our database software.  As part of the upgrade process, please note the following:

  • Software will be updated on your local PC automatically when you log onto your workstation on Monday morning (1/18), (or the next time you login to your workstation.)
  • You will notice very few changes to the WebXtender software, other than a new button for Syncplicity.  (Syncplicity is a separate product that we do not use at Denison)
  • The WebXtender software will take longer to launch the first time you use the software after the upgrade. This is expected behavior from the WebXtender software.
  • You may need to add “denison.edu” to your trusted sites within the Internet Explorer browser. Steps located here
  • You may need to set your Internet Explorer browser’s settings to compatibility mode. (This may be necessary if you notice that some of the WebXtender buttons look like they’ve had already been previously selected and clicked.)

If you experience difficulty after the upgrade, please contact the Helpdesk at x6395 or email helpdesk@denison.edu.

The email that appears to be from “no-reply@denison.edu” with no subject and a message in the email body that says “You have a message Enter Here to read.” is a scam. Please do not click on the link in the message. The message is not from Denison. It is another fraudulent attempt (aka phishing attack) to gather your username and password.

If you are using Denison Apps Mail:

Open the message and click the down arrow beside the Reply button and select “Report phishing” in the menu that appears. (Note: if “Report phishing” does not appear as an option and “Report not phishing” appears instead then the message is already flagged as phishing.)

This reports the phishing attack to Google and improves the identification and blocking of future phishing attacks. After you report it, please delete the message.

NOTE: this option is only available in the web (Gmail) interface for Denison Apps. It is not available if you are using Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or another client to access your Denison Apps email.

Please DO NOT RESPOND to or click links in this or any emails that request computer account or other personal information. They are an attempt to steal, at minimum, your email or other computer account, at maximum, your identity.

If you replied to it in any fashion, please immediately change your password by logging in to MyDenison and choosing “Change your BigRedID password” from the My Apps menu. Please contact the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@denison.edu or 740-587-6395 if you have any questions or concerns.
