Important Windows Update: Preventing Overheating, Battery Drain, and Unexpected Crashes On Your Computers

ITS has identified an issue resulting in HP Windows laptops overheating, battery drain, and experiencing unexpected crashes. We’re making a small but important change on Thursday, October 30th, 2025, to how your Windows laptop manages power when it’s running on battery with the lid closed.

This update is designed to prevent overheating, battery drain, and unexpected crashes that some users have experienced, especially when the laptop is left undocked.

Action

Please reboot your device after October 30th to ensure all changes and settings are fully applied.

What’s Changing?

When your laptop is unplugged and the lid is closed for more than 10 minutes, it will now enter hibernate mode instead of sleep. Hibernate mode fully powers down the device while saving your work, which helps:

  • Stop overheating and fan noise
  • Preserve battery life
  • Prevent crashes and data loss

What You’ll Notice

If your laptop hibernates:

  • You will need to press the power button to wake it.
  • You will be asked to enter your BitLocker key, just like after a reboot.
  • Your session will be restored exactly as it was – no lost work.

If the lid is closed for less than 10 minutes, it will wake up normally without needing the power button or BitLocker key.

Why This Matters

This change has already helped several users avoid issues with their laptops. It’s a simple adjustment that makes a big difference in reliability and battery performance.

Can I Change This Setting?

While we do not recommend that you change this setting, you will be able to adjust it if this does not fit your workflow through the power settings of your device by following the instructions here.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to improve your experience.
