Please take a minute soon to:

  • Update the Zoom client on your computer so you do not have trouble joining Zoom meetings and have access to the latest Zoom features and security fixes.
  • Set your Zoom client to update automatically so you stay up-to-date. We recommend choosing the “Slow” option which provides a bit of time between when new updates are released and when they are installed which enhances stability.

Mobile Device Note: Zoom updates on mobile devices (iOS and Android) are typically handled automatically through the App Store or Google Play Store. Ensure your phone’s automatic updates are enabled to receive the latest Zoom version (App Store, Play Store).

Why Update?

Every 3 months, Zoom enforces a new minimum version requirement for the Zoom client. If you have an outdated version, you will be unable to log in or join meetings until you update (see the Zoom Software Quarterly Lifecycle Policy for details). Additionally, Zoom is regularly releasing security fixes and new features. With an up-to-date Zoom client, you can more fully participate in Zoom meetings.

How to Update Zoom on Your Windows or Mac Computer:

  1. Open the Zoom application on your computer.
  2. In the window’s top-right corner, click on your profile picture or initials and select Check for Updates.
  3. If an update is available, a prompt will appear indicating the available version and automatically start to download it. Once it is downloaded, an Install option will appear with options to defer if needed. Click Install.
  4. Once installed, Zoom will automatically close and re-launch with the updated version.

Need Help? If you encounter any issues updating Zoom, please reach out to the ITS Service Desk via email at servicedesk@denison.edu or call 740-587-6395 and we will be happy to assist you.

Apple released macOS 15, Sequoia, on Monday, September 16, 2024. This is a major upgrade to the current Apple operating system, macOS 14 (Sonoma).

Information Technology Services (ITS) strongly advises that you DO NOT immediately install Sequoia for the following reasons:

  1. Compatibility testing: ITS is testing Sequoia’s compatibility with Denison systems and software. We have identified potential issues that may negatively affect key applications, including printing to network printers and logging into the machine from the lock screen.
  2. Timing matters: When considering a major operating system update, it’s best to wait until you aren’t depending on your computer to work as expected for daily tasks, especially during busy periods like the middle of the semester.

ITS continues to test macOS Sequoia with Denison systems and software. We will share an update on Sonoma’s compatibility as soon as we are able to do so.

Important Reminder: Before you update macOS on your computer, it is strongly recommended to back up your system and personal files prior to the update. In the rare event that there is a problem with the update process, it may be necessary to erase your computer’s hard drive, then install a fresh copy of the operating system and restore your personal files. To protect your important data, please adopt a recommended file storage location or backup approach.

If you have questions, please contact the ITS Service Desk at servicedesk@denison.edu or 740-587-6395.

The ITS team, working closely with our vendor partners, successfully resolved the Eduroam issues late last night.

To ensure a smooth transition, please switch your devices to the Eduroam WiFi network as soon as possible. To enroll in Eduroam for the first time, follow these directions. Denison-Guest will remain accessible but will require login every 24 hours starting next week.

Please contact the Service Desk with questions (servicedesk@denison.edu or 740-587-6395).

Update 8/29/2024 12:18 am

ITS is working tirelessly with our vendors to resolve the ongoing eduroam connectivity issues, but it’s proving to be more complex than anticipated.

To ensure reliable internet access on the first day of classes, we ask that you:

  • Use the Denison Guest network. We’ve increased capacity to support increased use.
  • Use the VPN for accessing on-campus resources like Banner or your U: drive.
  • Use Denison_Play for streaming and gaming on devices like Apple TVs and Xbox.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. Our top priority is to restore full Eduroam functionality as soon as possible.

Update: 08/28/2024 2:30 pm
ITS is continuing to troubleshoot the issue and is working diligently to resolve it as quickly as possible. We will update this post as soon as we have an update. For any questions, please contact the Service Desk at 740-587-6395 or email servicedesk@denison.edu.

All maintenance has been successfully completed.

Original Post:
ITS will be performing maintenance on the RStudio server on Saturday, August 24th starting at 5 am. r.denison.edu will be unavailable during this period. Please stop any running code on RStudio by midnight to ensure there are no issues when the service returns online.

The Microsoft Office suite has been a part of Denison’s software list for several years. This year, Microsoft changed its practice of providing unlimited Office365 licenses to educational institutions. While we will still receive basic licensing, keeping our fiscal responsibility in mind, Denison has purchased a limited number of additional higher-tier licenses to meet the needs of our campus.

What does this mean for me?

On 08/01/2024, if you are an enrolled student, teaching faculty, or a staff member who has used a Microsoft Office product in the last 12 months, this change will not affect your ability to use the Microsoft Office products.

If you are a staff member who has not used the Office products in the last 12 months, you will be assigned an A1 tier license by default which will allow you to read files in the Microsoft suite on your Denison-owned computer, but you will be unable to save the file to your desktop. You can continue using Office Online, but you will not be able to install the Microsoft Office applications on your Denison-owned device. Should you need to install the Microsoft Office applications to your Denison-owned device, you will need to request a higher-tier A3 license.

To use Office Online:

  • Go to office365.denison.edu and sign in with your BigRedID@denison.edu email address (e.g. doej@denison.edu) and password.

To start using Office Online, just click the icon for the desired app.

Availability of higher-tier license

  • Students:
    • Students can use Microsoft applications on classroom and lab computers.
    • All active students are assigned a named Microsoft Office application license by default that allows the installation and full use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Teaching Faculty:
    • Teaching faculty are assigned a named Microsoft Office application license by default that allows installation and full use of Microsoft Office applications on your Denison-owned machines.
  • Staff:
    • While not provided by default, staff can request a named license to install the Microsoft Office applications as a Denison employee.

Questions?

If you have additional questions, would like to review your options, or would like to request a license, please contact the ITS Service Desk at 740-587-6395 or email servicedesk@denison.edu.
